Day four of Julie’s vacation and it didn’t seem like she was seeing any relaxation. Even last night when she’d actually gotten buzzed, she’d spurned one guy’s advances and been shot down by another. Some track record.
Her vacation was slipping away. Her future loomed like a big dark cloud. She blew out air, sucked in more, blew that out—she was not feeling calmer.
She felt awful and she didn’t even have a hangover. Or maybe this was the Julie Barlow hangover and she just didn’t realize it.
She looked over at the suitcase she’d pulled out of the closet a few minutes before. Was she really going to pack her bags and leave? Just because her uncle was embarrassed to have been in a fight? A barroom brawl? A poker game dispute? Partners in crime?
She should have pushed Scatter for more information the night before.
If only she’d stuck to getting info, instead of being so self-involved and moany—and kind of interested in the arrogant bartender.
And that was another humiliation she’d rather not face today. Not that she could exactly avoid him for the next week.
She closed the suitcase and returned it to the closet. Looked at herself in the mirror. She didn’t look bad, considering. She’d just bluster her way through. Chin up. Smile on the face.
There was a rat-a-tat-tat on the door. Julie opened it, and Aggie and Kayla practically tumbled into the room.
“I’m surprised you guys are up already. I’m running late.” Julie pulled her alternate swimsuit out of the drawer.
“Where did you go last night?” asked Kayla.
“Yeah, one minute you’re all hot and heavy with Cliff, then poof, vanished.” Aggie grimaced. “Please tell me you didn’t come back here and read.”
Julie deliberated. To lie or just to prevaricate a little, that was the question. “Well . . .”
“What?” Aggie and Kayla leaned in attentively.
“I kind of met up with Alex Martin.”
“Alex . . . ?” Aggie broke into a full grin. “Scatterman? You go, girl. You go, girl,” she chanted, and began to dance around in the limited floor space.
“It didn’t go anywhere—well, not where these things normally go.”
“Oh,” Aggie said, deflated.
“But,” Julie added before they started feeling sorry for her, “he said I was drunk and he didn’t take advantage of drunk women”—or close enough—“and that he’d take a rain check.”
“And are you?” asked Aggie.
“Going to take a rain check,” Kayla added.
Julie shrugged. “It’s a long way between going to and did it.”
Aggie groaned. “Spare us technicalities. We’re on vacay. Go change, the beach is waiting.”
